Historical Background:
The Battle of Kannauj (also known as the Battle of Bilgram) took place on May 17, 1540. It was a decisive conflict between the Mughal Emperor Humayun and the Afghan leader Sher Shah Suri (Sher Khan).
Following his defeat in the Battle of Chausa in 1539, Humayun gathered a fresh army to confront Sher Shah Suri once again. However, due to superior military tactics and division within the Mughal ranks, Sher Shah Suri secured a resounding victory.

Consequences of the Battle:
This defeat forced Humayun to flee India and spend fifteen years in exile in Persia. It temporarily brought an end to Mughal rule in India, allowing Sher Shah Suri to establish the Sur Empire in Delhi. The Mughal dynasty was only restored in 1555 when Humayun returned and recaptured Delhi.
