Question Details

Two bodies A and B of same mass undergo completely inelastic one dimensional collision. The body A moves with velocity v1 while body B is at rest before collision. The velocity of the system after collision is v2 . The ratio v1 : v2 is :

Options

A

1:2

B

2:1

C

4:1

D

1:4

Show Answer

Correct Answer :

Option B

2:1

2:1

Solution :

Let the mass of each body be m. Body A moves with initial velocity v1 and body B is initially at rest, so its initial velocity is 0.

Because the collision is completely inelastic, the two bodies stick together after impact. Conservation of linear momentum gives

mv1 + m\,0 = (\,m+m\,)v2

Simplifying the equation, we obtain

mv1 = 2mv2

Dividing both sides by 2m yields the final velocity of the combined system

v2 = \frac{v1}{2}

Hence the ratio of the initial to the final speed is

v1 : v2 = v1 : \frac{v1}{2} = 2 : 1
